Since 2012, GreenLamp has reached over one million women and touched the lives of five million people in rural Ethiopia. Our mission is to empower women and girls through education, health-care and technology, and in doing so allow them to effect social and economic change in their own communities. Driven by the conviction that when you educate a woman, you educate a community, our long-term strategy rests on three core concepts: LEARN, LIGHT and LEAD.
Education unlocks brighter futures, both for individuals and for entire communities. By sponsoring Ethiopian women to complete their midwifery training we have seen a 67% increase in the number of safe deliveries, a 40% increase in the four prenatal visits recommended by the World Health Organisation, 26% more families bring their newborn in for post-natal check-up and almost 80% more women come for family planning and reproductive health advice.
Solar Suitcases provide reliable lighting, communication and power for rural delivery wards via sustainable, clean technology. The simple provision of facilities that most of us take for granted creates a safer, more dignified environment and a measurable decrease in traumatic birth injuries and preventable deaths.
The ripple effect of education and technology is incredibly powerful, especially in developing nations. Improved midwifery care reduces birth injuries that can leave women stigmatized and isolated, while helping even just a few young women to access education creates community role models and leaders for the future.
